Dr. Gotthelf designed the MedRx Video Vetscope
In the summer of 1996, Dr. Gotthelf, working in conjunction with engineers from MedRx, Inc. of Largo, Florida, designed a new instrument for veterinarians to use to diagnose and treat dog and cat ear problems. The MedRx Video-Vetscope (http://otopet-usa.com/Vet/vetscope.html) was launched in 1997. It is basically an endoscopic otoscope, which is used to examine the ears, that has a TV camera attached.
Within the body of the otoscope probe is a long thin channel through which instruments can be inserted. So while watching the highly magnified image on a large digital monitor, surgical procedures can be done. Deep ear canal flushes, ear drum surgery, middle ear flushing, removal of wax and foreign objects can be easily done with the Vetscope. Dr. Gotthelf can even do laser surgery in the ear canal without having to open up the ear cartilage. It makes tedious ear work much simpler.
The sales of this new, innovative instrument were so good that MedRx asked Dr. Gotthelf to do lectures to other veterinarians about ear diseases. In addition, they asked Dr. Gotthelf to teach an interactive laboratory session where veterinarians could learn to use the Video Vetscope and get "hands on" experience.
To date, Dr, Gotthelf has done over 350 of these 7 hour presentations at veterinary meetings all over the world.
