Dr. H. Winston Pirtle has
been a practicing veterinarian since he graduated from Auburn
University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1967. For the
last 33 years he has practiced at his own hospital in the south
Montgomery County area. During that time, he has treated dogs
and cats in addition to horses and cattle. He has also run a
dairy farm and beef cattle farm.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Pirtle has strived
to improve the quality and standards of veterinary practitioners by becoming
very active in organized veterinary medicine. He has been elected as
the President of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association on two
different occasions. In 1987, he was appointed by the governor
to the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, where he
served as President until 1991. During that time, he also served as
the President of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards
that reports national examination scores to the jurisdiction(s) where
a veterinarian desires to be licensed.
Dr. Pirtle is a "people person." His favorite part of small
animal practice is general surgery and trauma. When he is not
practicing, Dr. Pirtle tinkers on his farm, fishes, hunts, and he
rides his Gold Wing Honda.
